The local script designed on the basis of Chinese characters and used to record the Vietnamese language is known as Nôm 喃. After the separation of Vietnam from China in the 10th century, an increasing number of local characters appear in written documents. The earliest documents (inscriptions on stone steles of the first millennium AD) contain none, or very few, of the “local” characters designed on the basis of Chinese script.
